Literature Text

When you zoom out,
And examine mankind,
As a whole - we are one,
A writhing, mass of beings,
A mindless creature, feelingless,
Causing chaos, it seethes over the earth's surface,
And whatever mind it has is not its' own.

Yet looking closer,
The creature disperses,
It spreads, it breaks down,
Into the separate lives of men.
Each has their worries, their feelings, their dreams,
Their hopes for the future, their regret of the past,
A million times over,
A whole - but separate.

Keep this in mind as you hear the numbers.
Three thousand soldiers dead as a whole,
Their mothers waiting at home,
Their children eager to see them again,
Their books unfinished,
Their dreams diminished,
A whole - but different.

Twenty-three children dead or gone missing,
One missed his mother, the other his teddy,
Another's birthday in two days,
The presents left waiting in the cupboard,
Yet they are known through only their numbers-
Twenty-three children,
Separate - but whole.
I just notice that all the time on the news and things, we always view others misfortune with such coldness - we need to remember that all those people are people just like us :)
